An Israeli firm is piloting a new intelligent crosswalk technology in Peachtree Corners with an eye toward improving pedestrian safety. 

ConnVAS’s technology, driven by artificial intelligence, will be installed at an intersection outside Pinckneyville Middle School. 

The idea behind the tech, which includes cameras mounted on utility poles, is to alert drivers and walkers to impending safety threats, even when the user hasn’t physically activated the alert system. 

It also continually collects data to drive predictive insights that will aid with the development of safe infrastructure in the future, city officials said. 

“The ConnVAS system provides an innovative solution to common safety hazards such as pedestrians crossing outside of designated areas, failure to press crosswalk buttons and drivers failing to detect pedestrians or cyclists in time,” Brandon Branham, executive director of Curiosity Lab, the city’s award-winning proving ground for smart-city technologies. 

Executives from the Haifa, Israel-based company say testing in a real-world environment helps its software evolve, with the goal of scaling up deployment in Peachtree Corners and around the world. 

Curiosity Lab has long welcomed companies from around the world to test their technologies, with Israel being one of its predominant providers.
